Farmers often get nicknames from their customers. For customers at the Northside and Hyde Park farmers markets, Jim Lowenburg has long earned various monikers, including the “Garlic Guy.” Offering a diverse selection of quality produce, it is Running Creek Farm’s “gourmet garlic” that has earned a special reputation among market customers.
Since 2002, Jim and his wife Karen have been raising food on their property. They wanted to keep their family healthy and, as their gardens grew, they realized they could share that with their community as well. Over the past fourteen years, they have developed their small farm into a successful small business.
Running Creek Farm is located on a five-acre parcel in Mt. Healthy, with about one acre of cultivated land. With limits on growing space, Jim and Karen have gradually grown their business and honed the craft – with Running Creek Farm highlighting some beautiful examples of best growing practices. Jim follows organic growing methods, so no chemicals or synthetic fertilizers are ever used, and he also limits his need to use organic pesticides through strategic and effective use of row cover, shade cloth and mulch.
Running Creek Farm believes in offering a wide selection of produce and flowers to its customers. In addition to the 12-15 garlic varieties, they are also known for their diverse selection of heirloom tomatoes and other veggies. Their farmers market stands are thoughtfully designed with a beautiful display of what is in season.
Always interested in community-building activities, Jim has been active with the SW OEFFA chapter, as well as publication of the Central Ohio River Valley Local Food Guide, also known as the CORV guide. It has been a labor of love of a group of individuals concerned about the environment and focused on local food resources. The CORVguide is distributed free throughout Cincinnati via CityBeat in the spring of each year and is an indispensable resource to any individual hoping to source good, clean, and fair food year round.
