The Cincinnati chapter of Slow Food USA is thrilled to announce the upcoming celebration of the 2016 Snail of Approval Awards. This award recognizes those members of our food community whose efforts contribute to creating a more good, clean, and fair world. As food production has one of the most significant impacts on human health, the environment, and the world economy, it is critical that more people understand the importance of making responsible food choices – choices that are not just better for the world but also for our tastebuds! By recognizing producers of good, clean, and fair food, Slow Food hopes to drive consumers towards choices that will help create a more fair, healthier, and tastier world.
Slow Food USA, a branch of Slow Food International, has more than two hundred chapters throughout the US. As the food ecosystem across the nation varies dramatically, individual Slow Food chapters are responsible for identifying the specific criteria required of producers in their region for receipt of the award. Currently, approximately fifty Slow Food USA chapters award the Snail of Approval to members of their community.
In 2015, Slow Food Cincinnati (SFC) members worked diligently to create a new, more rigorous rubric and scoring system for the Snail of Approval award, with different criteria for each of three categories: Restaurant, Farm, and Food Artisan. The rubrics and additional information about the award and the process can be found on our website at http://www.slowfoodcincinnati.org/snail-of-approval/about-snail-of-approval/.
The local food movement in Cincinnati has exploded over recent years, providing great opportunities for new farmers, chefs, and entrepreneurs to serve a community in need of good, healthy food. This growth has come not only from the hard work of these producers, but also from individuals who have identified key problems within our food system and devoted themselves to addressing these issues with innovative solutions. This year, in addition to the farms, food artisans, and restaurants, SFC is pleased to recognize two of these “Local Luminaries” with the Snail of Approval.
On Monday, October 24th, SFC, together with Edible Ohio Valley, will be celebrating the great work of the following:
Suzy DeYoung – La Soupe
Rachel DesRochers – Northern Kentucky Incubator Kitchen
Over the next six weeks, SFC will be highlighting each of our awardees as we ramp up to the big event. Keep informed via Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to learn about these producers and why it is so important to support them as we all work towards a world in which all people eat food that is fresh and healthy, free of pesticides and chemicals, and produced and accessed in a way that’s beneficial to all – from the farmer to the eater.
